Abstract: Gastric cancer is uncommon in the USA but is very common globally and is endemic in East Asia. It is a virulent disease that presents with metastases in about one-half of US patients. In this review chapter, we discuss validated pre-, peri-, or postoperative strategies for locally advanced disease, with specific emphasis on studies performed in the West. These studies reveal that perioperative chemotherapy or postoperative chemoradiation improve outcomes relative to surgery alone. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
