Percutaneous image-guided core breast biopsy is faster, less invasive, less deforming, and less expensive than surgical biopsy for diagnosing breast lesions. Few studies of percutaneous breast biopsy address cost-effectiveness as rigorously defined as a ratio of cost per quality-adjusted life-years saved. However, there have been numerous analyses of the impact of percutaneous image-guided core biopsy on cost of diagnosis using theoretical models or actual patient data. The savings vary depending on the method of analysis, but all studies have found that percutaneous core biopsy spared a surgical procedure in most women, substantially decreasing the cost of diagnosis.
