Article Title: | Laparoscopy 2003: Oncologic perspective |
Abstract: | Advanced operative laparoscopy has become an important surgical approach in the management of women with gynecologic malignancies. These complex procedures require extensive laparoscopic retroperitoneal dissection and may be learned by, the dedicated physician. The laparoscopic approach opened the door to new and exciting possibilities such as fertility-sparing surgery in women with early cervical cancer. In addition, the overall complication rate appears acceptable, with no compromise in the oncologic outcome. Ideally, the role of laparoscopy in gynecologic oncology will be established as randomized trials, such as the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) LAP2 trial in women with endometrial cancer, are completed. |
