Abstract: |
The list of neoplasms involving the oral cavity is extensive, including neoplasms of the minor salivary glands and neoplasms of lymphatic tissue and epidermoid tissu, that is, squamous cell carcinoma. Given that over 90% of neoplasms of the oral cavity are of the latter variety, they will serve as the focus of this chapter. Neoplasms of the oral cavity have significant effects on respiration, deglutition, and speech. The propensity for locoregional recurrence of cancers of the oral cavity often necessitates multimodality therapy. Consequently, appropriate treatment planning should be undertaken by a multidisciplinary team including the following specialties: head and neck surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, prosthodontics, and speech-language pathology. |
