Article Title: Book review: Facing cancer and the fear of death: A psychoanalytic perspective on treatment
Abstract: Reviews the book, Facing Cancer and the Fear of Death: A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Treatment edited by Norman Straker (see record 2013-02007-000). The book is organized into three sections: a Medical Section, a Psychoanalytic Section, and Case Presentations. It addresses psychiatric dilemmas that arise while caring for the dying patient and provides useful recommendations on how to assist cancer patients as they near death. The authors describe, in narrative form, their patient's stories and their encounters and the common breaking and bending of 'the rules' while maintaining awareness of potential pitfalls. This book demonstrates the importance of understanding the nuances and ramifications of death anxiety while maintaining awareness of one's own countertransference. On the positive side, the book has an extensive evidence based bibliography on health care and reform, end of life issues, serious illness and the impact of countertransference on the analyst. There are many aspects of this book that highlight how dealing with death in therapy can be demystified and approached in a more realistic way. this is a comprehensive and well-written book that highlights the challenges of caring for the dying and includes moving stories of cancer patients.
