Abstract: |
(from the chapter) This chapter explores a meaning-centered therapeutic approach to managing grief and loss, and invites clients to turn their attention to various sources of meaning to help endure the pain of grief-through connecting with creative and experiential values, but also, importantly, through the attitude one chooses. Clients are viewed as the creators of the meaning in their lives. They may, for example, alter their meaning of their grief so that it is viewed as a reflection of the strength of the lost relationship or as a driving force to engage in a greater good, such as becoming active in a social cause. Highlighting this to bereaved clients can empower them; although their loss was beyond their control, what is within their control is how they face their suffering.
