Lehigh Valley health network (LVHN), a large academic integrated delivery network, Pennsylvania, has adopted a system for partners in performance improvement (SPPI) based on the Toyota Production System, to address an increased demand of the sterile processing department (SPD). The SPPI team worked with SPD staff and leadership by conducting a value stream analysis to identify and reduce or eliminate waste while improving flow time within the existing physical constraints. A lean event Lehigh Valley's SPPI team used production preparation process (3P) technique that focuses on eliminating waste through product and process design. The significant findings of SPPI include identifying resulting slowdowns when surgical case carts are assembled in two areas and recognizing through surgeons' input that some sterile supplies are redundant. |
