Article/Chapter Title: Interventions for smoking cessation
Abstract: (from the chapter) Smoking cessation has received the most research attention of any cancer-related behavioral outcome to date. Ample evidence has been found during the past decade on the effectiveness of approved pharmacologic and behavioral therapies for the treatment of tobacco dependence. However, there is still a need to enhance the dissemination of evidence-based treatments in real-world settings and to advance the training, preparedness, and accountability of health providers as they implement clinical practice guidelines for smoking cessation. Key challenges in this implementation include targeting intensive interventions to special high-risk populations and partnering with community-based medical and mental health care providers to improve readiness and capacity to deliver these interventions. This chapter provides a structure for the past 30 years of smoking cessation research, delineating areas in which progress has been achieved and areas that are still in need of research attention.
