Article/Chapter Title: The treatment of superficial tumors using intensity modulated radiation therapy and modulated electron radiation therapy
Abstract: Technological advances in diagnostic radiology with four-dimensional (4D) imaging have brought a new treatment modality in radiation oncology. While 2D X-ray imaging technology provided 2D radiation treatment planning, 3D volumetric imaging led to the development of 3D conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Recently, 4D imaging resulted in a series of research activities in the radiation oncology community and eventually led to the formation of the concept of 4D radiation therapy (4DRT). It is expected that this cross-pollination between diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology will continue in the future. This chapter presents principles and applications of IMRT and Modulated Electron Radiation Therapy in treating superficial tumors.
