Article Title: Exploring online discussions in men with testicular cancer: A qualitative and sentiment analysis of Reddit posts
Abstract: Purpose: The goal of this study is to better understand the content and tone of discussions that men with testicular cancer are having on the testicular cancer subreddit and to explore any unmet survivorship needs or concerns in men with testicular cancer. Methods: A total of 500 posts were randomly selected from the subreddit r/testicularcancer, spanning April to June 2023. Using qualitative analysis, the posts were categorized based on themes such as treatment options, side effects, personal experiences, advice-seeking, emotional sharing, men’s health issues, and expressions of gratitude. Sentiment analysis was performed using the validated tool VADER. Metrics collected included age, number of upvotes, cancer stage, pathology, and treatment discussed. Results: The predominant themes were seeking advice (66.8%), sharing personal journeys (58.8%), and sharing emotions (32.6%). Less frequently discussed themes included treatment options (15.2%), side effects (14.2%), and men’s health issues (9.8%). Overall, the majority of posts (262) had a positive sentiment, with an average VADER score of all posts of 0.12. Conclusion: Men with testicular cancer prioritize discussing personal experiences and emotional challenges on Reddit, indicating unmet emotional support needs in clinical settings. Despite a lower frequency of posts on men’s health issues, these topics garnered interest, highlighting potential barriers to discussing sexual health, even in online forums. Healthcare providers should recognize the value of these forums and consider referring patients to peer support resources while addressing emotional and sexual health concerns more comprehensively in clinical practice. Future research should explore targeted interventions to address the specific needs identified in these online discussions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.
