Abstract: |
This chapter covers the broad topic of medical emergencies in the dental office for dental practitioners in both the hospital and community practice settings. Recognizing symptoms of distress early, correcting the problem to avoid a full emergency is emphasized. Knowledge of appropriate initial stabilization of the patient and management of medical emergencies is essential for safe dental care for medically complex patients. Included are sections ranging from common problems that require a rapid response, for example, a thorough coverage of causes of syncope, to more uncommon but serious emergencies, including a range of cardiovascular problems in the dental practice setting. Also included is coverage of a wide variety of problems such as bleeding, epilepsy, respiratory, allergic reactions, and diabetic emergencies. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. |
