Article/Chapter Title: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome
Abstract: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a transient condition diagnosed by the presence of characteristic neurologic signs and symptoms and specific radiologic findings on neurologic imaging. Early recognition and diagnosis and timely treatment are critical to achieve reversibility and to prevent permanent morbidity and mortality. PRES may be due to a number of patient, disease, and pharmacologic factors, as well as other factors including sepsis, infection, and shock. This chapter details issues surrounding PRES, such as risk factors and etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations. Also examined are diagnostic testing and evaluation (including laboratory testing), treatment and management, symptom and emergency management, nursing interventions, interprofessional collaboration, and patient/caregiver education. © 2026 Springer Publishing Company.
