Article/Chapter Title: Increased intracranial pressure
Abstract: Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is a neurologic emergency that can be life-threatening; intracranial hypertension occurs with sustained elevated levels of pressure within the intracranial vault. Oncologic causes include tumor burden, swelling or bleeding in the brain, infection, and/or blockage in the cerebral spinal fluid pathways causing disruption in flow. Early recognition and management is critical to prevent cerebral hypoperfusion and brainstem death. This chapter details issues surrounding ICP, including risk factors and etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic testing and evaluation. The chapter also reviews treatment and management, emergency management, nursing interventions, interprofessional collaboration, and patient/caregiver education. © 2026 Springer Publishing Company.
