Article/Chapter Title: Cardiac tamponade
Abstract: Cardiac tamponade restricts cardiac inflow, decreases atrial and ventricular volume, decreases stroke volume, and decreases blood pressure. Cardiac tamponade is a potential life-threatening condition requiring urgent decision-making by the healthcare team involved in the care of the patient. This chapter explores the issues surrounding cardiac tamponade, including risk factors and etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations. In addition, the chapter details options for diagnostic testing and evaluation, different methods of treatment and management, as well as emergency and medical management. Also featured is information on nursing interventions, interprofessional collaboration, and patient/caregiver education. © 2026 Springer Publishing Company.
