Article/Chapter Title: Hypercalcemia of malignancy
Abstract: Hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM) refers to an increase in serum calcium levels in patients with cancer. The most common solid tumor cancers associated with HCM are breast, renal cell, and squamous cell carcinomas. In treating cancer patients with hypercalcemia, the main principles of treatment include improving hypovolemia, increasing calcium excretion, preventing or decreasing bone resorption, and promoting effective treatment addressing the underlying cancer. This chapter explores issues surrounding HCM, including risk factors and etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations. Also examined are diagnostic testing and evaluation, treatment and management, nursing interventions, interprofessional collaboration, and patient/caregiver education. © 2026 Springer Publishing Company.
