Article/Chapter Title: Classification system for maxillectomy defects
Abstract: The two maxillary bones contribute to creating a major portion of the midfacial skeleton, which is critical to both form and function in the midface. The midfacial soft tissue structures are closely related to the bony structure. Resection of varying portions of the maxilla with the overlying soft tissue, skin, periorbital, and intraoral structures creates patterns of specific defects. This chapter describes and classifies these defects as they relate to the various bony surfaces of the maxilla. This system of classification of defects allows the surgeon to more easily understand the requirements for reconstruction and algorithms can be created to address the appropriate flaps and approach to reconstruction. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.
