Article/Chapter Title: Consultation-liaison psychiatry and psychological factors affecting other medical conditions
Abstract: Consult-liaison (CL) psychiatry addresses complex medically ill patients who experience psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, CL psychiatry may address psychological factors affecting other medical conditions (PSAOMC) since these psychological factors not only impair quality of life but also worsen medical outcomes. This chapter explores the underlying concept of PSAOMC in relation to worsened medical outcomes and the role of the CL psychiatrist in mitigating these relationships. A history of CL psychiatry is reviewed for background context as a distinct discipline and its role with integrating psychiatric care into medical settings. As one particular application, PSAOMC is explored in the context of various medical settings such as oncology, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, dermatology, pulmonology, and reproductive medicine. These various settings reveal the cross-sectional applicability of CL psychiatry and how addressing psychological factors can concomitantly improve medical outcomes. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
