Abstract: |
Given the rising incidence of cancers with coexisting comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus (DM), there is currently a need for a better understanding of the relationship between the two conditions. Diabetes mellitus causes metabolic aberrations in different organs leading to an increased risk for cancer in various subsites. A deliberate measure to control diabetes not only averts diabetic complications but can also prevent certain cancers from appearing alongside such as stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, hepatocellular malignancies, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer. More studies are needed to decipher the pathophysiology of DM behind cancer and vice versa; biomarkers of cancer; judicial use of carcinogenic diabetic drugs; and to arrive at the recommendations for a patient with DM and to enable a cancer-free living. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024. |
