Abstract: |
This chapter highlights five landmark papers that exemplify the evolution of implant-based breast reconstruction from inception to present day. We begin with Cronin and Gerow's foundational paper describing the advent of silicone breast implants, followed by a discussion of tissue expansion and the development of two-stage tissue expander-to-implant reconstruction. We next discuss concerns regarding breast implant safety and the Mentor Core Study that led to the reinstitution of breast implants in the US marketplace. Finally, we conclude with two papers that represent advancements in modern-day surgical technique: the use of acellular dermal matrix, and the related resurgence of prepectoral breast reconstruction. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
