Until recently, primary fallopian tube cancer and peritoneal serous carcinoma were considered rare malignancies. It is believed that the incidence of these tumors has been substantially underestimated since epithelial ovarian and peritoneal carcinomas are likely derived from the fimbria of the fallopian tube. This novel theory originated with the discovery of fallopian tubal intraepithelial carcinoma in the fimbria of BRCA mutation carriers following risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Since these initial observations over a decade ago, several molecular and histopathological studies have provided important insights into the origin and molecular pathogenesis of this disease. Unfortunately, this disease continues to carry a poor prognosis despite optimal surgical technique and chemotherapy, largely due to a lack of effective screening tests and late-stage diagnosis. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. |
