Article/Chapter Title: Interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in surgical oncology
Abstract: With the discovery of x-rays in the late nineteenth century and then the introduction of Computerized Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners in the 1970s, these modalities have advanced radiation and interventional oncology to be two of the four pillars of cancer care (Lederman, Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys. 7(5):639–48, 1981; Schoenberg et al., Oncologist. 23(10):1162–70, 2018; Garvey and Hanlon, BMJ. 324(7345):1077–80, 2002; Ai et al., Investig Radiol. 47(12):725–41, 2012). Since their development, oncology patients commonly undergo these scans to assist with diagnosis, staging, surveillance, biopsies, symptom palliation, and as part of their treatment plan (Schoenberg et al., Oncologist. 23(10):1162–70, 2018). This chapter will review various types of oncologic interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that are performed with anesthesia. The procedures discussed in this chapter are typically classified as non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) cases since they are usually not performed in the operating room. NORA anesthetics can be challenging for patient anesthesia care due to their distance from the pharmacy, main operating rooms, and additional anesthesia personnel. In addition, these anesthetics may take place in rooms that were not originally designed to accommodate anesthesia equipment and monitoring requirements (Walls and Weiss, APSF Newslett. 34(1):3–4, 2019). Despite the challenges, anesthesia services in these locations should meet the standards of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (American Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Standards and Practice Parameters. 2018. https://www.asahq.org/standards-and-guidelines/statement-on-nonoperating-room-anesthetizing-locations; American Society of Anesthesiologists, Committee on Standards and Practice Parameters. 2020. https://www.asahq.org/standards-and-guidelines/standards-for-basic-anesthetic-monitoring). © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
