Article/Chapter Title: Special considerations for intensive care management of pediatric patients with cancer
Abstract: Children with an oncologic diagnosis may undergo surgeries that require admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Close monitoring of postoperative neurologic status, tenuous respiratory status, and fluid shifts that may arise following large intraabdominal or retroperitoneal surgeries is largely specific to the pediatric oncology population. In addition to the postoperative concerns in children undergoing surgery with an oncologic diagnosis, children with a new or recurrent anterior mediastinal mass also require preoperative admission to the PICU to facilitate operative planning in a monitored environment. Finally, the increased use of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs has helped structure the perioperative process for children with an oncologic diagnosis. The ERAS program is a comprehensive process aimed at improving patient outcomes after surgery from presurgical counseling to intraoperative pain control to follow up after discharge. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
