Article/Chapter Title: Involvement of the Oncology Nursing Society (Ons) in palliative care and educational programs in the Middle East
Abstract: The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a professional organization of more than 35,000 registered nurses and other healthcare providers around the world who are dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, research, and administration in oncology nursing. Palliative and end-of-life care is an important component to the physical, spiritual, psychological, and social care of the patient with cancer, and a topic on which ONS provides evidence-based literature, research, continuing education, and collaborative opportunities for partnership. The contribution of nurses in providing clinical palliative care and research has been extensive throughout the history of the profession and continues to be a growing role in the Middle East. ONS has been involved in education and training in the Middle East for many years, equipping nurses and other healthcare professionals to build clinical capacity and leadership development. Sustainable outcomes are facilitated through the identification of practice and policy improvement strategies in participants’ institutions and communities. Working in tandem with local and regional partners, such as the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC), ONS ensures culturally-relevant and meaningful instruction. In palliative care in particular, numerous cultural factors must be considered and addressed when preparing and delivering information. ONS presenters have learned a great deal from the interdisciplinary and nurse participants through multilateral discussions and case studies. The achievements made and barriers faced by the interdisciplinary care teams in the region are multifaceted, and there are a number of strategies being implemented to ensure quality improvements in patient care. Experiences gained from those who have taught and learned in the region, as well as initiatives led by ministries of health and other local organizations, serve as excellent reference and guidance for other countries in the world seeking to implement such practices. It is essential that nurses embrace the initiative to take the problems and solutions to their professional peers, leaders, policy makers, and the public. It is the hope of ONS that nurses globally will continue their quest to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to patients and families with cancer through their clinical practice and to pursue focused projects, leadership skills, coordination of care, advanced education, and research. © 2020 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
