Article/Chapter Title: Discomfort and adaptation. Mask interface problems
Abstract: The effectiveness of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for the treatment of respiratory failure has been extensively documented in the literature. Delivery of NIV is done via different interfaces with the goal of treating acute respiratory failure. Interface choice, fitting, and comfort can be challenging. In addition, NIV can be complicated by psychological distress, air leaks, skin damage and conjunctivitis. The purpose of this chapter is to explore and provide practical information on interface choice, aspects of mask adaptation and prevention of mask-related problems during the delivery of NIV. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
