Abstract: |
Medical and, more specifically, dermatologic imaging archives are electronic databases that contain clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological images. There are three types of imaging archives in medicine: medical atlases, private imaging archives, and open-access public imaging archives. These archives are used for clinical monitoring, teaching purposes, research, and the development of novel automated diagnostic tools such as machine learning. Imaging archives face several challenges including privacy, security and copyrights issues, lack of standards, incomplete metadata, problematic “ground truth” diagnoses, and lack of generalization. As medical digital photography gains popularity, imaging archives are expected to grow in number and become larger and more comprehensive. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. |
