Article/Chapter Title: Screening and assessment of burnout with a focus on oncology healthcare providers
Abstract: Burnout in oncology healthcare providers has increased over the last few decades. Oncology providers have always been at increased risk of burnout because of their responsibilities to care for patients with an increased likelihood of significant acute and chronic illness, suffering, and death and thus chronically dealing with grief and loss. Today, they face increasing administrative and practice challenges, working long hours and supervising the administration of highly toxic therapy. Informed by a comprehensive literature search, this chapter explores the benefits and limitations of several assessment tools to measure healthcare provider burnout. It also considers some of the associated factors that may help characterize oncology clinicians who are at risk of developing burnout, thus setting the stage for opportunities for relief and prevention.
