Article/Chapter Title: Cerebrospinal fluid circulating tumor cells for diagnosis, response evaluation, and molecular profiling of leptomeningeal metastases from solid tumors
Title Series: Clinical Aspects and Laboratory Determination
Abstract: Leptomeningeal metastases (LM) are a rare cancer complication whose diagnosis, traditionally relying on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology and neuroimaging, is challenging. In recent years, enumeration of circulating tumor cells (CTC) in CSF has emerged as a novel diagnostic tool in the early detection of LM, before patient experiences any neurological symptoms. This chapter provides an overview of LM and details the laboratory process of quantifying CTC in CSF and the studies that led to its Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act certification and explores its current and potential clinical uses. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
