Article/Chapter Title: Changing landscaping in transfusion-transmitted infections
Abstract: Transfusion transmitted infections, including bacteria, viruses and parasites, still remain a major concern for the safety of blood supply, despite all the efforts and progress made in the last century including donor screening to defer high risk donors and donor laboratory testing to rule out pathogens. The FDA has worked with the blood bank community to continuously strengthen the overlapping safeguards to protect patients from unsuitable blood and blood components. Implementation of pathogen reduction technology in blood supply provide additional safety measure for those known as well as emerging pathogens transmitted by transfusion. This chapter provides a review of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI) and discuss current and emerging approaches to reducing risk of TTI. © 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
