Article Title: Pain classification: Targeting therapy
Abstract: The article reports that pain classification is a useful heuristic process aiding in diagnosis and a valuable method of targeting therapy. The final product is a construct that can be termed the pain diagnosis. The pain diagnosis can be viewed as a parsimonious delineation of underlying organic etiologies, psychological and social disturbances, and functional impairments manifested by the patient with chronic pain. It recognizes the complex nature of chronic pain and encourages both appropriate balancing of therapies and identification of those elements in need of continual monitoring as treatment proceeds. The pain complaint can be classified by a variety of factors, including its temporal, topographic, etiologic, or pathophysiologic characteristics.
