Article Title: | Hunter Holmes McGuire and the coffee pot spout procedure |
Abstract: | Purpose: Hunter Holmes McGuire (1835 to 1900) was a Confederate surgeon who made a unique contribution to urology. Materials and Methods: Articles and lectures published by Doctor McGuire were reviewed pertaining to his experience treating diseases of the bladder and prostate. Results: Treatment of the enlarged prostate toward the end of the 19th century was unsatisfactory and morbid. Doctor McGuire devised a new procedure he called the artificial urethra, in essence creating the first continent cutaneous vesicostomy, by which patients could void with good control. Conclusions: Dr. Hunter McGuire is remembered for his unique contributions to medicine, surgery and urology. © 2007 American Urological Association. |
