Abstract: |
Gene therapy using suicide genes is now being adapted to clinical use. This method is based on the use of genes, whose expression under certain conditions leads to the death of cells transfected by them. This technology has been amply studied from the middle to the end of the 1990ies and described in numerous papers. During the recent decade studies of suicide gene therapy progressed from experimental to clinical studies on an extensive population of patients with malignant tumors. Today the studies are focused on search for more effective and safe approaches to the use of this method. The first example of effective use of the method in experimental and clinical oncology is delivery of herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase type 1 (HSV1-tk) gene into tumor cells with subsequent ganciclovir treatment, leading to their death. © 2009, Fund - Doctors, Innovations,Science for Children.
