Article/Chapter Title: Health surveillance programs
Title Series: American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Series
Abstract: Health surveillance of laboratory zebrafish colonies is necessary to ensure animal welfare and responsible use of animals. Timely recognition of the presence of infectious agents will be of assistance in the appropriate management of these conditions. Colony health status information is also necessary to allow for safe collaboration, including the sharing of different zebrafish lines, with other scientists. Several zebrafish pathogens result in pathology that may influence research, therefore, reporting the presence of these pathogens in scientific publications is of paramount importance to ensure adequate transparency of research results. This chapter will review the influence of zebrafish pathogens on research, determination of acceptable and excluded agents in a zebrafish colony, strategies for evaluating health status, testing methods and frequency of testing, health status reporting, and disease prevention. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
