Article Title: | Painful polyneuropathy |
Abstract: | The development of chronic neuropathic pain associated with peripheral neuropathy poses important diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for the treating practitioner. The clinical assessment must be designed both to identify the underlying etiology of the neuropathy if possible, and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and impact of the pain. If primary therapy is available, it should be offered. Concurrently, or in lieu of primary therapy if none is available, a multimodal approach to the pain and related physical, psychological, and social impairments should be undertaken. The treatment approaches are generally extrapolated from anecdotal experience and information gained in other populations. Nonetheless, a systematic and concerted effort to alleviate pain and improve function has the potential to yield results gratifying to both the patient and the clinician. |
