Abstract: To the Editor: Increasing attention has been paid in recent years by governmental policy makers, health care insurers, and the public to the rapid rise in health care costs. In an effort to determine how this concern has affected the professional medical literature, I reviewed articles describing diagnostic techniques or treatments of medical conditions appearing in five leading general medical journals — Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine, and American Journal of Medicine — for their inclusion of a discussion of cost.
