Abstract: BACK TO BASICS: In an excerpt from his latest book, The Fragile Species, the eminent scientist-author Lewis Thomas depicts a future when many of today's deadly diseases have been eradicated; he warns, however, that this future depends on advances in basic research and, thus, on full support of NIH as an independent agency, unburdened by bureaucratic and governmental pressures.
