Article/Chapter Title: Rehabilitation medicine in oncology
Abstract: (from the chapter) The progression of the field rehabilitation medicine is reflected in a shift in the World Health Organization's classification of functioning and disability. In 1980, the framework for classification in the International classification of impairments, disabilities and handicaps was based on "consequences of disease," whereas the current version, International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health focuses on "components of health." It distinguishes two parts of the disabling process: body structures and functions (anatomic and physiologic aspects) and activities and participation (completion of task and involvement in life situation). The WHO definitions are applicable to a broad range of rehabilitation issues, but are particularly relevant to cancer. The nature of many neoplasms and their treatments, the number of patients and survivors, and the need for rehabilitation in all stages of disease and treatment require the presence of a rehabilitation team across the disease continuum: outpatient clinics, inpatient units, and palliative care. In this chapter, we focus on the issues of the cancer patient in the rehabilitation setting, common therapeutic techniques used, and the role of the psycho-oncologist as part of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team.
