Article/Chapter Title: Negotiating the interface of psycho-oncology and ethics
Abstract: (from the chapter) The name psycho-oncology defines the interface between the challenges of cancer and cancer treatment, and the human stresses it engenders. It ranges from relatively calm periods, through the whole gamut of human experience with illness, sometime cure, but sometimes the slide into death. This still young discipline has grown in response to those stresses, endured by patients, their families, and in a different way, the medical caregivers. The runaway success of medical science in improving care and survival of cancer is cause for celebration. But it continues to bring, at an accelerating rate, situations which cannot be foreseen. Not only unknown, many of them are unimaginable until their dramatic appearance into clinical situations. Novel situations generate novel problems. We must never forget that the most difficult ones are unrelated to science per se. But they are deeply connected to humanity's inadequacy in managing the sociocultural, psychological, and ethical correlates of scientific advances. In the clinical setting, these inadequacies translate into new ethical questions. This chapter will review the special features of the psycho-oncology hospital and clinic settings and will outline a method that helps the consultant who is called into an intense, complicated situation where physical, psychological, and moral issues are all in play and the participants are highly invested and emotionally involved.
