Article/Chapter Title: Occult blood
Abstract: Occult bleeding refers to an unexpected presentation of blood in stool, urine, or other body fluids without visible evidence as to the origin of the bleeding. Rapid, inexpensive, and sensitive methods to detect occult blood are clinically important to help locate the source of bleeding and evaluate the significance of blood loss. The detection of blood in stool can suggest clinically relevant problems, especially in patients who present with unapparent anemia or other generalized indications of a possible gastrointestinal disease or disorder (l,2). © 2003 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.
