Article Title: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci
Abstract: The emergence and proliferation of enterococci resistant to all commonly used antimicrobials, especially vancomycin, has serious implications for immunosuppressed and debilitated patients, including cancer patients. There is currently no clinically proven therapy that is effective against enterococci resistant to ampicillin, aminoglycosides, and vancomycin. Careful susceptibility testing in the clinical laboratory is crucial in guiding alternative therapy. Aggressive infection control measures and prudent use of vancomycin are vital to control the spread of vancomycin-resistant enterococci.
