Article Title: Postsplenectomy infections in oncology patients
Abstract: Impaired immune function following splenectomy is associated with increased susceptibility to severe infection and sepsis. The increased risk of infection is related to the underlying illness for which the splenectomy was performed and is most marked in patients with neoplastic diseases. Patient age and time since spleen removal are also important factors. Various strategies are available to prevent the morbidity and mortality from severe infections in asplenic patients with and without cancer.
