Abstract: |
Presents an obituary of Ruben Cesarco. Ruben was a major figure in psychiatry and psycho-oncology in Uruguay and South America over the past 20 years. He was trained in Rochester, NY, with George Engel and was a proud proponent of Engel's biopsychosocial approach to patient care, which he carried back to South America. He returned to Montevideo where he founded the Psychosocial Medicine Unit at the Machiel Hospital in 1985. He was a key figure in educational activities in South America over the past decades, which spanned psychiatry, consultation liaison, psychosomatic medicine and palliative care. Ruben was a teacher and scholar at the international level as well, particularly in psycho-oncology. He served with distinction on the Editorial Board of the Psycho-Oncology Journal. He was equally engaged in the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and often served as the bridge to bring together colleagues in South America and North America. Ruben was respected for his clinical skills, his teaching, scholarship, and collegiality. Ruben was known to be congenial, kind, and gracious; he had a great sense of humor. He was a beloved colleague and dear friend who shared our enthusiasm for the 'human' side of patient care. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved). |
