Article/Chapter Title: Suicide and desire for hastened death in people with cancer
Abstract: (from the chapter) Cancer patients are more likely to express suicidal ideation and commit suicide than both the general population and other medically ill populations. Hence, clinicians working with these patients should be competent in the identification and assessment of those who are at risk for suicide. This chapter presents an overview of the literature on suicide and desire for hastened death in cancer patients. Relevant topics include prevalence, risk factors, assessment of suicidal ideation, as well as clinical guidelines to address, manage and intervene with patients who express suicidal ideation or a desire to hasten death.
