Article/Chapter Title: Barriers to fatigue communication
Abstract: Fatigue is a highly prevalent multidimensional and distressing symptom which is difficult to define and quantify. Often fatigue is not fully assessed in terms of its intensity, associated distress, impact, or patients beliefs regarding it. Barriers to the communication of fatigue may include: patient-related barriers, provider-related barriers, and system-related barriers. Patient-related barriers to communicating about fatigue may include: concerns that fatigue is a sign that my illness is getting worse, concerns regarding taking away focus from the major illness, concerns that if I talk about fatigue, my doctor will have less time for other more important things, concerns that my doctor will think that I am a ?complainer?, and/or having the impression that everyone has fatigue and I should just ?suck it up? and continue my usual routine. More research and perhaps the use of novel instruments may help patients to better report their experiences regarding this potentially devastating and treatable symptom. © 2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
