Managing Your References

Software tools like EndNote, RefWorks and Reference Manager help you easily manage and keep track of citations you discover as you conduct searches. These tools are often grouped together under the label bibliographic management software. If you have specific questions or would like additional information, please contact Sarah Jewell.

What can Reference Management software do for me?

Reference Management software enables you to create searchable databases, or "libraries," from references you locate in a bibliographic or image database, online catalog, or from an article/book chapter. These programs also interact with Microsoft Word documents to automatically format references to create footnotes, end notes, and bibliographies in various citation styles.

Which Reference Management tools are supported at MSK? How do I request access?

EndNote and RefWorks are the two reference management tools supported at MSK by Information Systems and the Library. Reference Manager is also used by researchers and individuals at the Center.

  • EndNote – MSK employees can request installation by contacting the Information Systems Help Desk at 646-227-3337.
  • RefWorks – this Web-based application is available from the Library's Web site. MSK staff can register for an individual account. At the RefWorks site, new users should click on the Sign up for an Individual Account link and fill out the form.

How can I get started using EndNote or RefWorks?

The Library supports and provides informal and scheduled information sessions on EndNote and RefWorks. Visit our Class Registration page to view the current schedule and to sign up for a class. Individual and departmental sessions can also be arranged by contacting Reference Services at 212-639-7439 or by completing the Ask a Librarian form.
